Keeping the Home Warm...or Cool

Many homeowners take their heating and cooling systems for granted (it either seems to work well or you call a repair person). But the systems must be considered when planning a room addition.

"You have to make sure the equipment you have is sized properly and can handle the work of cooling or heating an additional room," said Estimator Lance Klimek from Superior Mechanical Systems. If not, you can upgrade your existing furnace or add a new system altogether.

"We sell a lot of Mini-Splits (a package heating and cooling system) and American Standard split systems," said Klimek. "The installation is less labor-intensive for a Mini-Split, which takes about a half day to install."

One product that customers are splurging on to stay warm in the Minnesota winters is In-Floor (or Radiant) Heat that keeps floors nice and toasty. "Upgrading to an In-Floor Heating system is always easiest when involved from the earliest planning stages," he said. "Installing it only takes about two to four days and makes a dramatic difference in the home's comfort."
