Refiguring Your Plumbing

Remodeling a bathroom often gives a homeowner a chance to update their plumbing and either choose new products or reconfigure the arrangement of their room. "There are big benefits to updating that weren't thought of years ago," said Mark Nelson, plumbing division manager at Tonna Mechanical, Inc.

Some of the most popular new features Nelson sites include are water-conserving toilets, "Right Height" toilets that have higher-than-average seats for the elderly, and Scald-guard faucets to protect people from hot-water burns. "There are new colors and styles (including faucet finishes) that are guaranteed for life," said Nelson. "In custom bathrooms, we are seeing personal sprayers and/or rain shower heads."

"We are lucky in Rochester to have a number of plumbing vendors and wholesalers," he said. "Special order items usually only take about one week with installation taking a few days." Since most of a bathroom is built around the plumbing, it's best to start working with a skilled contractor right from the design stage of a remodel.
